Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgery

Cardiovascular and Thoracic surgery involves the surgical treatment of organs situated inside the thorax or the chest. This type of surgery therefore deals with heart diseases as well as lung diseases. In many countries, cardiac surgery (involving the great vessels and the heart) and thoracic surgery (involving esophagus, thymus, lungs etc) are separate specialties.


VATS – In Video-Assisted Thoracic Surgery, the surgeon inserts a long and thin tube, called thorascope, which has a camera attached to it through a small incision they make in the chest. The surgeon watches the ‘live’ video from the thorascope on a high-res screen on monitors kept inside the operating room.
